What is GST? A Simple Explanation for Business Owners

What is Goods and Services Tax (GST)?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax that has replaced many other indirect taxes in India, such as VAT, service tax, and excise duty. It was implemented on July 1, 2017, with the slogan "One Nation, One Tax, One Market."

The main goal of GST is to streamline the tax system, reduce the cascading effect of taxes (tax on tax), and create a unified national market.

How Does GST Work?

GST is a destination-based tax. This means the tax is collected by the state where the goods or services are consumed, not where they are produced. It is levied at every stage of the supply chain, from the manufacturer to the final consumer. Businesses can claim an Input Tax Credit (ITC) for the taxes they paid on their purchases, which prevents the cascading effect.

Types of GST

There are three main components of GST in India:

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales.
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state sales.
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales.

For example, if you sell a product within your state, you will charge both CGST and SGST. If you sell it to someone in another state, you will charge only IGST.

Understanding GST is essential for every business owner in India to ensure compliance and smooth operations.
