Understanding GST Registration
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified tax system that has replaced many indirect taxes in India. For most businesses, getting a GST registration is mandatory. It not only makes you legally compliant but also opens up opportunities to work with other registered businesses.
Who Needs GST Registration?
You need to register for GST if:
- Your annual turnover from goods exceeds ₹40 lakh (or ₹20 lakh for special category states).
- Your annual turnover from services exceeds ₹20 lakh (or ₹10 lakh for special category states).
- You are involved in inter-state trade.
- You sell products on e-commerce platforms like Amazon or Flipkart.
Documents Required for GST Registration
Before you start the process, make sure you have the following documents ready:
- PAN Card of the business or owner.
- Aadhaar Card of the proprietor/partners/directors.
- Proof of business address (like an electricity bill or rent agreement).
- Bank account statement or a cancelled cheque.
- Passport-sized photographs.
Step-by-Step GST Registration Process
The registration process is completely online and can be done through the official GST portal.
- Visit the GST Portal: Go to www.gst.gov.in and navigate to 'Services' > 'Registration' > 'New Registration'.
- Part-A of the Form: Fill in your basic details like PAN, mobile number, and email. You will receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) after OTP verification.
- Part-B of the Form: Log in with the TRN and fill in the detailed business information and upload the required documents.
- Submit and Verify: Submit the form using DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) or EVC (Electronic Verification Code).
- Receive ARN: After successful submission, you will receive an Application Reference Number (ARN) on your mobile and email.
- Approval: A tax officer will review your application. If everything is correct, your GSTIN (GST Identification Number) and registration certificate will be issued within 3-7 working days.
